Transition to High School at LPS

Year 6 Transition to High School – Week 9 at LPS.

Commencing Monday, 3rd December, Year 6 students will participate in a transition week at Laburnum Primary School.

Students will be regrouped and given a timetable for the week. They will be expected to report to their home room each morning, collect their books and then proceed to their classes for English, Maths, History, Technology and Science. Homework will be assigned during Transition Week and will be expected to be completed.

Students will compete in House Cup finals and we will have a visit from the Blackburn High School Junior Band. The City of Whitehorse, “Youth Connexions”, will also speak to our students about support services available to them.

Students do not have to wear school uniform during this week.

Transition Week promises to be an exciting week for Year 6 students at LPS.

Guest Speaker from Blazeaid, charity that supports farming communities.

Dear Parents,

On Thursday 1st November at 2:40 pm in the Staff Community Centre, the Year 5 and 6 children will be listening to Dennis and Helene Livingston, a retired couple in our area who assist in the running of the charity BLAZEAID.

Blazeaid has been featured on the ABC and began as a result of the Black Saturday bushfires, replacing farmers fencing that had been destroyed. They have since moved into other forms of support, including weekends / holidays away for farmers experiencing financial hardship as a result of a natural disaster including the current drought that is being experienced in rural communities in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Dennis and Helene will talk to the students using a Powerpoint presentation for about 20 minutes, sharing the purpose and role of the charity and what they do to support communities when they are contacted by them.

They will allow time for questions at the end.

The content directly relates to our current inquiry and the visit is the direct result of a Year 6 student’s inquiry question about organisations and charities that offer support to farmers in drought and how support is given to these communities.

We look forward to their presentation!

Term 4

Welcome parents, guardians and students of Year 6,  Term 4, 2018.

What an exciting final term  of primary school we have planned for your child.

Our inquiry unit of work this term is investigating droughts with our key questions being:

  • Where and why do droughts occur?
  • How do droughts impact our lives? What can we do to minimize it?
  • How do we manage the impact of a drought?
  • How do we minimize the impact of a drought on our lives and the environment?
  • What can we design to combat the drought effects on our community?

We have STOMP dance from week 5 on in preparation for Graduation, the Summer Cup as year 6 sport, and a major focus on transition and preparing your child for Secondary Schooling.

We thank you for all your support and sharing in your child’s final term of primary school with you.

Kind regards,

Miss Chen, Miss Psaila, Mrs Longman, Mrs Hartney and Mrs Mason.

If you are free, available and have a Working With Children’s Check, Mr Ed Conner, PE teacher, would love to hear from you.

Many thanks,
